Spectral, photon counting x-ray computed tomography (PC-CT) has been installed in hospitals. Its improved spatial resolution captured many people’s attention, and overall, the first generation of PC-CT has been a major success. “What’s next?” is the question I have been asked frequently lately. In this forum, I present my view on the key technology for the next generation of PC-CT and the current status of research activities.
