Speakers: Marius George Linguraru, D.Phil., M.A., M.Sc.

Artificial Intelligence may be the greatest tool we have for improving the quality of and access to medical care for children, especially those most vulnerable to health inequities. There are over 400 million people with a rare disease in the world and one in three children with a rare disease dies before the age of 5. Children with rare or marginalized diseases–a focus of Dr. Linguraru’s research–are particularly vulnerable if AI is not implemented well. But vast amounts of data are needed to drive effectively the algorithms that are at the core of AI, and that data is unlikely to be available. Dr. Linguraru is pioneering new technology that only requires limited data to benefit children with rare diseases and those who lack access to high-resource healthcare systems. He will discuss, with examples, the equitable and responsible uses of AI in pediatric healthcare and the opportunities that these emerging technologies bring to underserved communities.
