Augmenting Reality: Virtual Readers to Supercharge AI for Lung Cancer Screening

Forum Details

Date: Friday, November 21, 2025 12PM Eastern Time

Speakers: Joseph Lo, PhD from Duke University

Advances in AI is rapidly accelerating radiology research, yet major barriers remain in translating these gains into clinical practice. This presentation highlights the latest work from the Center for Virtual Imaging Trials – virtual readers designed to perform clinical interpretation tasks in chest CT for lung cancer screening. Dr. Lo will introduce new AI benchmark models for lung nodule detection and classification, leveraging the Duke Lung Cancer Screening and other new public datasets. He will present an AI framework that generates chest CTs and use that synthesized data to enhance downstream virtual reader performance. These virtual readers can be integrated into a unified system to mirror the multi-step workflows of radiologists. Together, these tools demonstrate how virtual readers and virtual imaging trials can drive meaningful progress toward clinical adoption.
