Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) is a common disease that is typically asymptomatic until lethal complications such as aortic dissection or rupture occur. TAA management includes regular surveillance of aortic size by cross-sectional imaging techniques such as computed tomography angiography (CTA) to identify growth, but growth measurements have high measurement error (~2-5 mm) in the setting of typically slow TAA growth rates (~1-3 mm/year). Vascular Deformation Mapping (VDM) is a registration-based technique for accurately mapping aortic growth, developed at Michigan and commercialized by Imbio Inc. In this seminar, we discuss the development and validation of VDM software, with a particular focus on deep learning-based algorithms for a fully automated VDM workflow and assessment of the reproducibility of VDM measurements. In particular, we discuss progress towards assessing the effect of CT reconstruction parameters on the reproducibility of measurements using DukeSim, the CT simulator developed by the CVIT.
